The hash brown casserole at Cracker Barrel is one of their most popular dishes. However, it is not gluten free. For this reason, I thought I’d share how you can make your own hash brown casserole at home. This recipe is inspired by one from Fave Healthy Recipes.

 Is Cracker Barrel mac and cheese gluten-free?

Ingredients

The ingredients you’ll need for this recipe are:

  • 30oz of shredded hash browns (ensure they are defrosted)
  • 1 finely diced large onion
  • 12oz of evaporated milk
  • 2 teaspoons of chicken bouillon granules
  • cornstarch slurry (equal parts cornstarch and water)
  • 7oz of low fat Greek yoghurt
  • 6oz of grated cheddar cheese
  • 4 tablespoons of melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons of diced butter
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper

Step-by-Step to Make Gluten Free Cracker Barrel Hash Brown Casserole Recipe

Now all you need to do is:

Step 1: Prepare

Preheat your oven to 350F. Whilst preheating, grease a baking dish in preparation for the casserole.

Step 2: Make the Sauce Mixture

Add the milk and bouillon granules to a saucepan and mix over a medium heat until the milk comes to a boil. At this point, add the slurry gradually and keep stirring until the mixture begins to thicken. Now remove from heat and leave to cool down. Now, add the cheese, onions, yoghurt, salt, pepper and melted butter. Mix well.

Step 3: Bake

Pour the mixture over your shredded potatoes and combine well. Now add the entire mixture to your prepared dish and place the diced butter on the top. Bake in the center of your preheated oven for around 50 minutes to 1 hour. At this point, it should be browned. If it’s not browning, try broiling for a few minutes to help crisp the top. Leave to cool for 10 minutes before eating. Enjoy!
