Are McDonald’s Fries Gluten Free? & GF Fries Recipe

Today, we’re going to be answering the question: are McDonald’s fries gluten free? And taking a look at which food products you can safely enjoy when eating out at McDonalds. It’s worth noting that this post will be focused around the McDonalds in the United States. It’s important to say that McDonald’s allergens vary across the world, and some countries even have a separate gluten free menu. However, this post is for US McDonald’s okay. With that in mind, are McDonald’s fries gluten free? Let’s take a closer look.

What Are McDonald’s Fries?

Wherever you are across the globe, you’ll definitely have heard of these world famous fries! They’re usually made from tasty potatoes such as russet, burbank or shepody. These infamous fries are best known for being soft and fluffy on the inside, whilst being golden and crisp on the outside. Let’s be honest, these fries need no introduction!

Ingredients In McDonald’s Fries

You may be wondering which ingredients make these fries as iconic as they are. Each McDonald’s fry contains the following:

  • potatoes
  • vegetable oil
  • natural beef flavor (wheat and milk derivatives)
  • dextrose
  • sodium acid pyrophosphate

Are McDonald’s Fries Gluten Free?

As you can probably tell from the list of ingredients, McDonald’s fries from the US are not gluten free. This is because they contain natural beef flavor which has been derived from wheat. As wheat is a gluten containing grain, these fries are unfortunately not suitable for those following a gluten free diet.

As well as that, fryers are often shared in places like McDonald’s, so the oil will also be contaminated with traces of gluten from foods such as breaded chicken nuggets.

Do McDonald’s Fries Have Dairy?

As well as not being suitable for those with a gluten intolerance, they’re also unsuitable for those with a dairy intolerance too. The natural beef flavor they use for the fries is derived from both wheat and milk products. Milk contains dairy, so should therefore be avoided if you’re following a dairy free diet.

Are McDonald’s Hashbrowns Gluten Free?

Much like their fries, the hashbrowns at US McDonald’s are also not gluten free. They contain the following ingredients:

  • potatoes
  • vegetable oil
  • natural beef flavor (wheat and milk derivatives)
  • salt
  • corn flour
  • dehydrated potato
  • dextrose
  • sodium acid pyrophosphate
  • extractives of black pepper

As you can see, wheat and milk are both listed as allergens in this product. You should not consume McDonald’s hashbrowns when following a gluten free diet.

Do McDonald’s Have Anything Gluten Free?

While McDonald’s do not market any of their food as “gluten free”, there are plenty of options that do not contain any gluten ingredients. The difference between the two is that foods that are labelled “gluten free” contain less than 20ppm of gluten, which is the legally safe limit. McDonald’s do not guarantee that any of their food is free from gluten. This means that it’s up to the individual whether they want to take the risk.

They need to be completely dry before going into the oil.

Preheat your oil to around 300 degrees. Place the fries into the oil in batches. Leave to cook for around five minutes. After this time, remove with a spoon (slotted spoon is ideal) and lay on paper towels. They do not need to be crispy at this point. Repeat until all fries have been cooked. Popcorn is a great snack and it can be relatively nutritious too, depending on which flavor you buy. It’s a well loved snack all around the world, but does popcorn have gluten in it? Let’s take a closer look.

What Is Popcorn?

There are six major types of corn, with popcorn being one of the most popular. Popcorn is a type of kernel which when heated, expands and pops – and that’s where it gets it’s infamous name. The kernel contains the seed’s starchy shell with around 15-20% moisture. When heated, this turns to steam. The most common types of flavored popcorn are sweet, salted and butter. However, there are unlimited choices when it comes to popcorn nowadays.

Ingredients In Popcorn

You may be wondering what the ingredients are when it comes to popcorn. The ingredients in popcorn can vary depending on which brand you’re buying and what flavor the popcorn is. However, if you’re making your own popcorn, the only ingredients will typically be:

  • corn kernels
  • oil

Salt and butter are usually added too.

Does Popcorn Have Gluten In It?

As popcorn is made from corn (which is a gluten free grain), in it’s most natural form, popcorn will always be gluten free. If you’re looking for a quick snack, even if you have celiac disease, popcorn is typically gluten free and safe to consume.

However, if flavorings or spices have been added to the popcorn, this may mean it’s not gluten free. Butter, sweet and salted popcorn is usually gluten free. Other flavors may vary, so be sure to check the ingredients for the most up to date information.

Also, cross contact is something you need to keep in mind. Due to harvesting, milling and preparation methods, corn may come into contact with gluten during these processes. If this is the case, it should be clearly displayed on the ingredients label.

Is Microwave Popcorn Gluten Free?

When it comes to enjoying popcorn at home, microwave popcorn is my popcorn of choice. Typically, microwave popcorn is gluten free. Jolly Time and Butterkist are two leading brands of microwave popcorn; both of which display clear gluten free labels on their products. For this reason, we can safely enjoy both.

Is Butter Popcorn Gluten-Free?

Yes. Butter popcorn usually only contains corn kernels, butter, salt and oil. None of those ingredients contain any gluten. However, you may want to check as every manufacturer is different, and will have differing processes.

Is Air Popped Popcorn Gluten Free?

Yes. There is no reason that air popped popcorn should contain any gluten. In it’s most natural form, air popped popcorn should always be safe for those following a gluten free diet.

Is All Popcorn Gluten Free?

In it’s natural form, all popcorn is completely gluten free. Mainly because popcorn is made from corn kernels. And corn is a gluten free grain. However, the problem arises when flavorings or toppings are added. Some of these will not be gluten free. This is why it’s always best to check ingredients labels, even if you think a product seems safe to eat.

Is Movie Theater Popcorn Safe?

In my personal experience, I’m yet to come across a movie theater popcorn that contains any gluten ingredients. However, there can be an issue with cross contact in movie theaters. Theaters typically sell gluten containing foods such as nachos and hot dogs. If you’re worried about cross contact, just make your server aware before ordering so that they can take all the necessary precautions when preparing your order.

Today, we’re going to be answering the question: are Sonic tater tots gluten free? And taking a look at which products you can safely enjoy when eating out at Sonic Drive-In. Fast food restaurants can be difficult to navigate when following a gluten free diet. The kitchens are usually small, and the fryers are often shared. For this reason, it can be hard to find foods that are safe to eat. But are Sonic tater tots gluten free? Do they have any other gluten free options? Let’s take a closer look.

What Is Sonic?

Sonic (or Sonic Drive-In) is a fast food restaurant chain that has been around for almost 70 years! They currently only operate in the US, but have over 3,500 locations across the states. For this reason, it’s best to check with your server before ordering, and make an informed decision for yourselves. The only allergen listed in the tater tots from Sonic is soy.

Carl’s Jr Menu Fries Recipe (Copycat Chili Cheese Fries)

If you’re looking to recreate the infamous chili cheese fries from Carl’s Jr at home, they’re super easy and absolutely delicious. This recipe is inspired by one from Dinner at the Zoo. Let’s take a closer look.

Ingredients

For the fries

  • 32oz of French fries (frozen)
  • 2 cups of shredded cheese
  • handful of green onions
  • dollop of sour cream
  • cooking spray

For the chili – Are Carl’s Jr Fries Gluten Free

  • 1 tsp of vegetable oil
  • 1lb of ground beef
  • 1/2 cup of diced onion
  • 1 tsp of minced garlic
  • 1 can of diced tomatoes
  • 2 8oz cans of tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup of beef broth
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp of brown sugar
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1/4 tsp of pepper
  • 1 can of kidney beans (drained and rinsed)

Recipe

Step 1: Prepare the Chili

Add oil to a pot and heat over a medium to high heat. Once hot, add the beef and add the pepper, along with most of the salt. Break up the beef as it cooks and after a few minutes, drain off any grease. Once drained, add the diced onion and cook for a further 4-5 minutes, or until the onion is soft. Now add the garlic and stir for around half a minute. Now add the remaining salt, tomato sauce, tomatoes, broth, chili powder, cumin, paprika, cocoa powder and brown sugar. Mix well and leave to simmer.

Step 2: Simmer

Leave to cook for around 30-45 minutes. This allows time for the chili to thicken. Be sure to stir occasionally throughout cooking. After this time, add the cans of kidney beans and leave for a further 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Leave on a low heat while you prepare the fries.

Step 3: Cook the Fries

Spray a pan with cooking spray and place the fries evenly onto the pan. Follow the instructions on the packet and remove from oven once ready.

Step 4: Serve

Now turn the heat to 400F. While the oven is heating, spoon over your chili mixture and sprinkle shredded cheese over the top. Place in your oven and leave until the cheese is melted. Add sour cream and onions. Serve and enjoy!
