Peanut butter has become a staple in many households. Smooth, crunchy, spreadable, or thick – adding peanut butter to almost anything makes it even more delicious. But today we’re going to be answering the question: does peanut butter contain gluten?
Table of Contents
Is Peanut Butter Gluten-Free?
Peanuts are, of course, gluten-free. And in it’s purest form, peanut butter is often gluten-free. But that isn’t always the case. In foods that are more processed, there’s always a chance that extra ingredients can be added – and those additional ingredients could contain gluten. There’s also a chance that although no gluten-containing ingredients are on the label, it may not have been made in a separate facility. Therefore there would be a risk of cross-contamination. This will usually be made clear on the label of anything your purchase – so be sure to check!
It’s always safer to opt for products that state that they are gluten-free on their packaging – so let’s take a look at some of the safest, tastiest options. Don’t worry, there are several brands to choose from!
Jif
If you’re looking for a creamy, fresh-roast peanut taste from your peanut butter – this is the one for you. They have a huge selection of gluten-free options which are clearly labelled gluten-free. Their peanut butter also contains no artificial preservatives. Their recipe consists of around 80% of peanuts – that’s a lot of peanuts! Some of their products include:
- No Added Sugar Creamy Peanut Butter Spread
- Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter
- Reduced-Fat Creamy Peanut Butter
- Natural Crunchy Peanut Butter with Honey
- Natural Creamy Peanut Butter
Those are just a few. You’ll find Jif products in your local grocery stores and are easily accessible.
Justin’s
Justin’s is certified gluten-free which means all its products are tested and confirmed to contain fewer than 10 parts per million (ppm) gluten. They also offer peanut butter cups and protein bars, which are all suitable for a gluten-free lifestyle. Justin’s range of flavors of peanut and almond butter include:
- Classic Almond Butter
- Maple Almond Butter
- Honey Almond Butter
- Chocolate Hazelnut and Almond Butter
- Cinnamon Almond Butter
- Coconut Almond Butter
- Vanilla Almond Butter
- Classic Peanut Butter
- Honey Peanut Butter
Their Classic Peanut Butter contains just two ingredients: dry roasted peanuts and palm oil (orangutan-friendly palm oil, I will add!). All of the flavors come in a range of sizes and their website states that 96% of customers would recommend their Classic Peanut Butter to a friend – those are good stats if you ask me!
Crazy Richard’s
Whilst this brand doesn’t have a wide range of flavors, I’d consider them to be the most natural and environmental friendly. They’re certified gluten-free and only use one product in their peanut butter – peanuts! That’s right; they contain no sugar, no salt, no palm oil and are non-GMO. Their natural nut butters are:
- Creamy Peanut Butter
- Crunchy Peanut Butter
- Almond Butter
These are highly rated among the gluten-free community and they have other products on their website too, which are also certified gluten-free. It’s certainly worth a look.
Reese’s
Okay, so Reese’s isn’t the healthiest or organic – but it sure is one of the tastiest! They may only have two different flavors:
- Creamy Peanut Butter Spread
- Chocolate Peanut Butter Spread
but this brand is a real household favorite and it’s peanut butter doesn’t disappoint. It’s extremely sweet and tastes perfect on toast. Whilst it doesn’t state on the packaging anywhere that it’s gluten-free, there are no gluten-containing ingredients on the label.
Skippy
Skippy is another brand that offers a selection of flavors. I couldn’t possibly list them all because we’d be here all day! But a few available are:
- Peanut Butter Blended with Plant Protein Creamy/Chunky
- Skippy Creamy Butter
- Skippy Super Chunk Peanut Butter
- Reduced-Fat Creamy Peanut Butter
- Natural 1/3 Less Sugar and Sodium Peanut Butter
Their website has a FAQ section and it clearly states that any gluten-intolerant individual can enjoy all of their peanut butter flavors – lucky us!
SunButter
I added this brand because I’m sure there are lots of gluten-intolerant individuals out there who also suffer with a nut allergy but are desperate to try something resembling peanut butter – well, look no further! SunButter is certified gluten-free and is free from the top 8 allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat, and soybeans). The recipe contains just one ingredient – organic roasted sunflower seeds. I love this brand because it really is suitable for almost everyone, which is very rare.
RXBAR
This brand offers a great selection of not just peanut butter, but also snacks too! But we’re focusing on their peanut butter jars and those flavors include:
- almond butter
- maple almond butter
- vanilla almond butter
- peanut butter
- chocolate peanut butter
- honey cinnamon peanut butter
These are not just gluten-free. They’re also dairy-free, soy-free, contain no added sugar, and no artificial colors or flavors. I love the packaging of this brand as all of the ingredients are printed in large writing on every product, to make it easy as possible to navigate. I wish all products made shopping as easy as RXBAR!
Peanut Butter Shopping
However easy it may be to shop for gluten-free peanut butter, it may be best to always go for certified products. You will end up paying more if you go for the certified gluten-free options but this way you’ll be absolutely certain that there will no gluten in peanut butter. If finding the cheapest option is important to you, or you want to stick with a well-loved favorite that doesn’t state whether it’s gluten-free – email or call the company! Most brands are more than happy to give out additional information you may need.
